Their AI shopping assistant Rufus, which launched in 2024 and handles millions of shopping queries per day, is expected to support UCP-structured catalog and checkout interactions as the protocol matures across Amazon surfaces.
For AI agents, Amazon's Tech Council membership signals that UCP will eventually become the standard interface for querying Amazon product listings, triggering checkout flows, and accessing post-purchase data — the same way agents today interact with Shopify-based stores. This is particularly significant for subscription, B2B, and high-volume consumer purchase use cases where Amazon dominates.
Third-party Marketplace sellers using Fulfillment by Amazon will inherit UCP compatibility through Amazon's platform layer, similar to how Shopify merchants gain UCP support automatically through the Shopify platform.
