Loyalty Programs and AI Agents: How UCP Enables Automatic Rewards at Checkout

How AI shopping agents can automatically apply loyalty points and rewards during UCP-powered checkout, covering the technical approach and practical implementation for developers.

Loyalty programs are one of the least automated parts of consumer shopping. Most consumers leave points on the table because they forget to apply them, do not know their balance, or find the redemption process inconvenient. AI agents fix this problem naturally: they can check balances, calculate redemption value, and apply rewards at checkout without the consumer having to think about it.

Getting this right requires knowing how loyalty programs expose their data, how rewards are applied at checkout, and where UCP fits into the picture.

The Loyalty Data Problem

Loyalty program data lives in fragmented silos. A consumer might have points with a fashion retailer's proprietary program, a coffee chain's app-based program, Smile.io on five different Shopify merchants, and an enterprise loyalty system like Antavo on a large retail brand. None of these talk to each other. Each has its own API, its own authentication model, and its own redemption flow.

For an agent to automatically apply loyalty rewards, it needs:

  1. Knowledge of which loyalty programs the consumer is enrolled in
  2. Authentication credentials or OAuth tokens to read balances from each program
  3. Logic to calculate whether redeeming points adds more value than saving them
  4. A way to apply the reward at checkout on the specific merchant

Step 4 is where most implementations break down. Applying a loyalty reward at checkout varies significantly between merchants. Some expose a coupon code that the consumer enters. Others require a loyalty account login before checkout. Enterprise programs may apply the reward server-side once the consumer's loyalty identity is linked to the transaction.

How Loyalty Redemption Works Today

The most common loyalty redemption pattern in e-commerce is the discount code. A consumer earns points, exchanges them for a discount code in the loyalty platform's interface, and pastes the code at checkout. This is functional but not automatable without an API that generates codes programmatically.

Smile.io, which powers loyalty programs on tens of thousands of Shopify merchants, exposes a REST API that allows programmatic reward retrieval. An agent with API access can look up a consumer's points balance, retrieve available reward coupons, and apply the coupon at checkout in a single flow. The coupon code gets passed as a discount code during the Shopify checkout process.

Enterprise platforms like Antavo work differently. They often integrate directly with the merchant's POS or checkout system, applying loyalty benefits server-side once the consumer's loyalty identity is confirmed. The agent does not need to handle a coupon code. Instead, it needs to ensure the consumer's loyalty ID is attached to the order.

UCP's Role in Loyalty Automation

UCP creates a standard for declaring checkout capabilities, including identity linking. When a merchant publishes a UCP endpoint, it can declare that it supports loyalty program enrollment and reward application as part of its checkout capability manifest.

A UCP-compliant loyalty flow works like this: the agent queries the merchant's UCP endpoint, detects that the merchant supports a specific loyalty program or identity-linking capability, passes the consumer's loyalty identifier during checkout, and the merchant's system handles reward application. The agent does not need to know the specifics of the merchant's loyalty platform implementation.

This is the same pattern UCP uses for payment token exchange. Rather than the agent needing to know which payment processor the merchant uses and how to format a payment token for that processor, the agent exchanges a standard UCP payment token and the merchant handles the rest. Loyalty works the same way: the agent passes a loyalty identity, and the merchant applies the relevant reward.

Practical Implementation

For agents handling loyalty today (before broad UCP loyalty support is available), here is a practical approach:

Store consumer loyalty credentials at setup. During agent setup or onboarding, prompt the consumer to connect loyalty accounts. Use OAuth where available. Store the access tokens with appropriate encryption.

Check balances before checkout. When an agent is about to complete a purchase on a merchant where the consumer has a loyalty account, fetch the current balance. Do not cache balances for more than a session because points can change between agent runs.

Calculate redemption value. Points are not always worth the same amount per dollar. Some programs give 1 cent per point. Others give 0.5 cents. Redemption value also varies by reward tier. Before automatically applying points, calculate whether the redemption rate is favorable.

Surface the decision to the consumer. Automatically applying 500 points for a $5 discount is straightforward. Applying 10,000 points that represent $100 toward a $120 purchase is a bigger decision that warrants consumer confirmation. Build thresholds into your agent logic.

Handle expiring points. Loyalty programs expire points. An agent that checks expiration dates and prioritizes soon-to-expire rewards delivers clear value that passive loyalty management does not.

What to Watch

Smile.io and Antavo both have published APIs that agents can integrate today. As UCP adoption grows among merchants, expect loyalty capability declarations to become part of standard merchant UCP manifests, making automatic reward application a first-class feature of agent-powered checkout.

For developers building loyalty-aware agents, browse the commerce-enablers category in the UCPList directory for a current list of loyalty and rewards platforms in the ecosystem. The directory home also tracks UCP integration status so you can see which platforms have moved from ecosystem participants to live UCP integrations.
